National Week 2012

Join the Movement. Read Aloud. Change the World.

Tuesday, March 05, 2013

Tomorrow, March 6, marks the fourth annual World Read Aloud Day. We often take for granted the gift of reading, its pleasures, its pains, its power, tomorrow gives us the opportunity to reflect on the marvels of reading and take action to show the world that literacy is not a privilege but a right that belongs to all people.

Pam Allen of LitWorld (the founding body) encourages librarians to celebrate in your libraries by reading aloud, giving away a book or doing anything you can to “read it forward” on behalf of the 793 million people who cannot yet read.

I plan to read aloud my favourite Austen passage, Elizabeth Bennett’s stinging refusal of Mr. Darcy’s hand. What will you be reading?

Accredited courses and aligning National standards

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

Syba Signs is totally committed to providing quality Professional Development for teachers and teacher librarians and we are thrilled to announce that the quality of our programs has been recognised by the NSW Teachers Institute who have accredited us for the two PD programs we are running in the first half of this year. The first “School Libraries Making a Difference: What is your evidence and how do you get it?” and the second an all new program “The National Curriculum: Developing a Guided Inquiry and Web 2.0 Approach”.

Currently the NSW Teachers Institute is working towards aligning their current set of standards with the recently published National Professional Standards for Teachers. The structures of the NSW and National standards are essentially the same but there are some minor terminology and grouping differences. This is excellent news because when the transition is completed we will be able to offer our quality accredited courses nationally.

The format of our two accredited courses this year include:

  • An accredited full day seminar with Dr Ross Todd and Lyn Hay on Evidence based practice titled “School Libraries Making a Difference: What is your evidence and how do you get it?" These days will be held in Adelaide, Perth and Melbourne. Full details head to the seminars section of our website or view our scope of endorsement below.

  • An accredited full day seminar with Dr Ross Todd and Lyn Hay on The National Curriculum and Guided Inquiry titled ”The National Curriculum: Developing a Guided Inquiry & Web 2.0 approach” This day will be held in Sydney. Full details head to the seminars section of our website or view our scope of endorsement below.

We plan more high quality accredited Professional Development for the second half of the year and in the meantime for more information about the National professional standards go to the NSW Institute National Professional standards.

We look forward to sharing our inspiring program with you.

International Book Giving Day!

Thursday, February 14, 2013

Today, February 14 is International Book Giving Day, a volunteer initiative to give kids better access to books and promote a love of reading. The main idea is simple, give a book to a child. The project offers three ways to do this:

  • Give a book to a friend or relative

  • Leave a book in a waiting room or lobby for a child to read

  • Donate a book to a local library, hospital, shelter or to an organisation that distributes books to children internationally

The books can be second hand, borrowed, signed, inscribed, electronic or print. Giving a book is giving a book.

You can connect with people celebrating International Book Giving Day by heading to their Facebook and Twitter pages. To grab a bookplate to put on the book you are giving away, free downloadable posters, share photos and to register head to the website.

Let's get as many books to children as we can today!
